Aerial Yoga is a type of exercise that combines yoga with other types of exercise, such as dance and gymnastics, into a hybrid mind-body workout. Anyone who can do at least three consecutive sit-ups can do Aerial Yoga.
During a class, you’ll be “cocooned” in a supportive silk hammock while an instructor leads you through a series of postures designed to “recalibrate the body” and decompress the spine. During inversion postures, you’ll hang about three inches above the ground.
Aerial Yoga is a technique that incorporates yoga principles such as breathing, stretching and meditation with gymnastics and aerial arts. Muscles lengthen and tone while allowing the body to receive the benefits of zero-compression inversion. These kinds of inversions create space in between each vertebrae and releases stress and tension from the lower back. This form of yoga practice shares traditional yoga’s mind-body connection principles.
Most Aerial yoga classes begin in womb pose. The students begin class completely cocooned in their hammocks while participating in breathing and meditation exercises – simple, but very restorative! The suspended inversions involved in this type of yoga have many physical benefits for the nervous system.
