Despite his mainstream success, Bryan’s roots in yoga are firmly grounded in the ancient practice, and his journey as a yogi has been a gradual and authentic evolution. At the age of 15, he embarked on a transformative journey from his hometown in Detroit to Hawaii, where he relocated to live with his father, a medical professional who recognized the advantages of yoga. Initially skeptical like many, Bryan’s perception of yoga transformed when his father introduced him to the physical style of Ashtanga yoga. Intrigued, he witnessed significant physical and mental changes in himself, fueling a newfound passion for yoga. This passion led him to spend a year in India, studying with revered yoga masters such as Pattabhi Jois. Since then, Bryan has remained committed to his yoga journey, continually advancing and sharing his expertise with others.
In his renowned Master Class, Bryan guides with an enjoyable touch, blending laughter, thoughtful reflections, and a good sweat. Anticipate engaging in well-rounded flowing asana sequences that prioritize the practice itself, not fixating on the end result. The rewards of this class are manifold, ensuring you depart with more than just physical benefits – expect to leave with a beaming smile on your face.
Bryan Kest’s Master Class offers a concise (3 hours) deep dive into the essence of the “Yoga Practice.” Beyond enhancing physical strength, practicing yoga is about nurturing the qualities of the mind that significantly impact our overall well-being. While having a toned and flexible physique has its advantages, true health and contentment stem from cultivating a calm and peaceful mind. Contemporary science and medicine emphasize that ninety percent of diseases are psychosomatic, originating in the mind and manifesting in the body.
Recognizing this, ninety-nine percent of yoga practices focus on meditation or devotion, targeting the mental state. In light of scientific and yogic insights, it becomes imperative to acknowledge and prioritize the mental aspect, bringing it to the forefront of our practice for a more comprehensive well-rounded approach.
The aim of the 3-hour session is to seamlessly integrate various elements. This involves a robust and well-rounded yet straightforward physical practice that invigorates every corner of our bodies, leaving them pulsating with vitality. Simultaneously, the class presents mental challenges aimed at fortifying positive and powerful qualities while diminishing harmful and stress-inducing ones.
The emphasis lies on reinforcing qualities such as calmness, patience, focus, gentleness, gratitude, humility, and acceptance. Concurrently, efforts are made to diminish qualities like judgment, competitiveness, distraction, reaction, and criticism, recognizing their significant impact on our health and happiness. These qualities, much like anything else, thrive when nurtured and wither when neglected. Given that our physical practice provides a fertile ground for these qualities to surface, it serves as an opportunity to strengthen the positive ones and weaken the detrimental ones.
The intricacies of how to achieve this transformation are best experienced rather than explained, representing the culmination of nearly 40 years of Bryan’s Power Yoga teaching practice. The Power Yoga class comprises a 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour session incorporating asana and meditation practices.
